How to Get the Perfect Candid Wedding Photos

It always seems like it’s the perfect shot..

You see them all the time, a couple whose moment was captured perfectly. The shot captures a genuine moment of emotion. happiness and love. Yet none of it was posed or planned. If you ask yourself how they do it, I’m going to share 3 tips with you today on how to achieve the perfect candid shot. Whether you’re a photographer or a couple, this blog is meant to help you achieve the shot that will hang in your home for years to come.

Tip 1: Actions over Poses

The first tip is very simple but the most important, actions over poses. It’s very natural to feel awkward when being asked to pose especially since most people aren’t used to it. Over the course of a 6-8 hour wedding day, posing can become exhausting and irritating. Instead of posing, I have found it easier to have my couples do small actions. I’ll ask them to walk from one side to the other or do a quick twirl. While it may sound silly, these silly actions will help you loosen up and give a genuine smile. Relaxing and enjoying the day is part of the experience and little actions can lead such a long way to delivering a quality gallery.

Tip 2

Forget The Camera

Always remember that you’ve hired professionals to capture the day for you and you should trust them to always capture the moments. On the day of your wedding, your job is to forget the camera. So much planning and timing goes into the day, your only goal should be to enjoy it. The less you worry about the day, the more genuine your experience will be. The more genuine you are, the better your shots will be. Hug your parents, kiss your partner, dance with your friends and trust that the camera is always close and always ready!

Tip 3: The Right Photographer

There are many different types of wedding photographers all specializing in something different. If your goal is to authentically capture the day, you need the right photographer with the right experience. Two of the most popular candid types of shooting are photojournalistic styles as well as documentarian styles. I personally shoot this styles but with an emphasis on cinematic pictures. Every shot should have purpose and invoke some type of emotion. Always be ready and never miss a moment! Having a photographer that includes a second shooter is equally important as they can capture multiple angles of a day.
